Common Dental Emergencies

Dental emergencies can range from toothaches to knocked-out teeth. Some of the common emergencies we handle include:

  • Chipped or broken tooth – exposes the inner layers of the tooth, leading to increased sensitivity, pain, and potential infection. Early intervention can ensure a higher chance of successful repair.
  • Swelling or Abscess – An emergency tooth abscess is a painful condition where pus accumulates near a tooth due to a bacterial infection. It causes severe pain, swelling, redness, and can even lead to a fever. Tooth abscess treatment involves addressing the underlying infection to relieve the associated pain.
  • Gum pain – can be a sign of various underlying issues, such as gum disease, infection, or inflammation causing bleeding gums or bad taste or odor in the mouth.
  • Broken or Lost crown or filling – exposes the underlying tooth and lead to intense sensitivity, pain, and vulnerability to decay and further damage.
  • Severe toothache or sensitivity that causes sharp, persistent intense or throbbing pain, especially when consuming hot or cold beverages and chewing food. Our toothache pain treatment will focus on alleviating discomfort and addressing the underlying cause of your symptoms.
  • Knocked-out tooth can occur either from a trauma or accident, or due to an injury during sporting activities and requires immediate attention. An avulsed tooth is where a tooth gets completely dislodged from its socket.
  • Fractured tooth due to dental trauma or accident requiring emergency tooth extraction.
  • Wisdom tooth pain – Impacted Third Molars can cause wisdom tooth pain or gum infection around the partially erupted tooth

When are extractions needed?

  • Sometimes, a tooth needs to be removed when it’s grossly decayed beyond repair or fractured.
  • Severe dental infection posing a risk to your health.
  • Conditions like severe gum disease, loose teeth or dental abscess  may also require extraction.
  • In certain cases, a tooth might be extracted to prepare for orthodontic treatment due to overcrowding.
  • Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are often extracted if they’re impacted, causing discomfort or damaging neighboring teeth.
  • Baby teeth need to be extracted if it is causing pain or infection. Over- retained baby teeth sometimes need to be extracted, if it is causing the ectopic eruption of the permanent tooth

Dr. George will carefully evaluate your teeth and recommend the best course of action for your unique situation. She will also discuss the ways we can replace the missing tooth before moving forward with extraction such as dental implants, bridge or dentures.

Alternative to tooth extraction

While extraction is sometimes the best option, alternatives may be considered if the tooth can be saved. These may include root canal therapy and crowns. We always weigh all options and discuss them with you before making a decision.

Sedation Dentistry

At Smile Haven, we understand that dental procedures can cause anxiety for some. That’s why we offer sedation dentistry options such as nitrous oxide sedation or laughing gas to help you feel relaxed and comfortable during your tooth extraction.
