Scaling and Root Planing
Gingivitis

What is Gingivitis?

  • Gingivitis is the inflammation of the gums.
  • Gum disease is often silent, meaning symptoms may not appear until the advanced stages.
  • If you haven’t received a professional cleaning in a while, you may experience symptoms of gingival inflammation such as bleeding gums, tartar build up or bad breath.
  • Gingivitis can be reversibly treated with the right professional therapy and good at-home oral hygiene habits.

What is Periodontitis?

  • Gum disease, if left untreated, can advance to the underlying bone causing periodontal disease.
  • At this stage, it is irreversible and needs immediate attention to prevent further spread of the disease.
  • Toxins produced by the bacteria in plaque irritate the gums and stimulate a chronic inflammatory response in which the body essentially turns on itself, and the tissues and bone that support the teeth are broken down and destroyed. Gums separate from the teeth, forming pockets between the teeth and gums that can become infected.
  • As the disease progresses, the pockets deepen, and more gum tissue and bone is destroyed. Eventually, with further bone loss, teeth can become loose and may fall out or need to be removed or may develop an abscess from infection.
  • Periodontal disease is a chronic condition that may contribute to the progression of other systemic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer etc.

How can we treat Periodontal Disease?

Scaling and Root Planing:

  • It is a non-surgical gum therapy, commonly known as “deep cleaning” designed to treat periodontal disease and improve the health of your gums and teeth.
  • It is a periodontal treatment that scales beneath the gumline to remove plaque, tartar and other bacterial toxins from periodontal pockets.
  • Root planing smooths the tooth root surfaces to prevent the reattachment of harmful toxins and promote gum tissue healing.

Antibiotic Therapy:

  • Application of local antibiotics to eliminate bacteria, treat gum infection and reduce gum inflammation is a part of periodontal gum treatment.

Periodontal Maintenance:

  • After initial Scaling and Root Planing treatment, regular ongoing periodontal maintenance therapy and good at-home oral care is necessary to prevent relapse and restoring gum health, ensuring that your gums remain in optimal condition.
  • Early intervention helps to prevent gum disease, stop the progression of gum issues and maintain gum health.

Is Periodontal Therapy Necessary for You?

If you’re experiencing symptoms of gum disease, such as swollen or bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, gum recession, sensitive teeth, loose teeth or gum abscess, periodontal treatment may be necessary. At Smile Haven, we’ll evaluate your condition and recommend the best gum teeth treatment options to restore and maintain your oral health.
